When did Augusta overtake Atlanta as the most liberal city in GA (Columbus: appointed, neighborhood)

Augusta is not a liberal city... yes there may be some liberal people living in the Augusta area, but overall trhe area is quite conservative. The original posting was claiming that Augusta was more liberal that Atlanta.. that is just way off base.

If Augusta is more liberal than Atlanta, then why does Augusta not even have a Gay pride festival or gay parade?
The city won't even allow an adult bookstore to open in a mostly industrial area (the owners are fighting the city in court and will probably win). I've lived in Augusta most of my life and like living here, but it is still very much a bible belt southern city with very conservative values. Augusta votes democratic in most statewide and presidential elections because the city is slightly majority black and very much a blue collar city...two groups that reliably vote democrat.. but on social issues these same people tend to be very conservative.

Downtown Augusta has strip clubs so a adult book store is nothing. That doesn't really mean anything.

The strip clubs were grandfathered in... no new ones can open.. the adult bookstore is X-mart.. and it has been trying to locate near 56 loop... not near any churches or schools.. but the city continues to deny their request. the owners have taken them to court and that is where the matter lies... the point being that the city is essentially fighting a losing battle that will easily end up costing taxpayers well over a million dollars in legal fees.. all to stop an adult bookstore from opening in an out of the way part of town.. that just doesn't sound very liberal to me. Augusta probably has become more liberal than it was 20 years ago, but it is not like Atlanta or even Athens for that matter (college towns always tend to have a liberal streak in them).

I don't understand why Augusta-richmond county vote for obama in the 2008 election. Was higher than Athens-Clarke and Savannah-Chatham then. If those places are more liberal according to you. You keep talking about black population but the city of Macon. Is alot blacker than Augusta and Augusta's vote for obama was still alot higher than Macon. How many black kids attend UGA in Athens?

Answer the question why Augusta vote for obama was higher than Savannah, Macon, and Athens. When Savannah and Macon have a 7-8% higher black population than Augusta.

Columbia is a conservative county in Augusta. But that's one compared to Forsyth, Cobb, Gwinnett, Cherokee, Paulding, Coweta, Fayette, etc in Atlanta.

Athens GA is the most liberal city in GA. Just check the voting record for the last 25 years! In fact you would be very hard pressed finding one conservative among the many faculty on the UGA campus.

Augusta voted for Obama because the city is majority black..and Obama carried like over 90% of the black vote...and that doesn't mean the city is liberal... many blacks in Augusta are churchgoers and tend to be very conservative on social issues like gay rights, etc.
Athens is more classicly liberal in the San Francisco sense.
