Well, it's not fair to go off land size or population solely by themselves, its a combination of both of them, density and amenities as well.

If we were to only use land size, Jacksonville could argue it was one of the biggest cities in the country. If we only use population, several "residential suburbs" of huge urban cities could argue they are bigger and more of a city than actual cities that may have a smaller population.

It's still
Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Albany, Athens in that order in my opinion, maybe you could flip flop sav/aug, mac/col, and alb/ath, but thats just the way I see it.

Something not right because the US Census reports Shows......
2000 2007
Athens/Clarke co. 100,266 112,760
Albany 76,939 75,825
Atlanta 416,474 519,145
Columbus/Musg co. 185,781 Columbus had no Change according to The US Census
Savannah 131,570 130,331
Augusta/Rich co. 195,182 192,142
Macon 97,255 93,076 Pop moved to new developed areas of Bibb co.technically still Macon.
Roswell 79,339 87,312
Sandy Springs 85,781 83,166
Warner Robins 48,800 60,392

After Macon/Bibb Consolidation it will put Macon at about 157-160,000 pop.

If you go by population density... then Savannah is second after Atlanta.. if Savannah and Chatham county were ever to consolidate ..like Augusta and Athens did, then Savannah would easily be the second largest city with around 250,000 ppl.
It is rather interesting that many of the second tier cities actually lost population during this period or made virtually no gains. As expected, all most all of the growth is in metro Atlanta.. Good to see the city of Atlanta jumped by about 100,000 ppl, since it had been steadily declining for years.

The bottom line is- the population of a city is what is inside of the city limits. Period. Not nearby, not in the county, not what was once there or may be there soon, but in the city limits at the time of the population count. The things some of you do to justify population are hysterical....reminds me of those who buy fast cars or big trucks to compensate for lack of "male parts"!

City populations are really meaningless in this context. Metro populations mean much more. I mean really, Atlanta has a city population of 519,000 but the traffic of 5 million. 519,000 doesn't really shed any real light on Atlanta.

Metro populations tell the real picture:
Atlanta 5,278,904
Augusta 528,519
Macon 386,534
Savannah 320,013
Columbus 282,756
Athens 187,405

Read my post above yours & try again. There is a difference between city & metro populations.
