Hey y'all. Some buddies and I are getting a cabin in Blue Ridge, GA in a couple weeks and I'm wanting to bring my gear along and kick back on the banks for a few hours as it appears to be within walking distance from where we'll be staying.

I'm just wondering what type of river it is. Being in the mountains I'd assume it's the shallow, fast-moving shallow type full of beautiful rainbows, brookes and browns, but I'd hate to show up with a box full of small spinners, flies and Power Bait to find out that I should be lunking for hawgs and smallmouth.

I appreciate any assistance.

All the rivers up that way, especially the Taccoa are trout streams. Using small spinners, like rooster tails and flies, if you are a fly fisherman, would be great. Here's a couple sites to check out for info:

Georgia DNR - Wildlife Resources Division click on fishing and fishing oppurtunities. it has maps for each county of what streams are year round or seasonal. our season doesn't start till March 31st.
North Georgia Trout Online - NGTO = fly fishing site. see what people are saying about the fishing up that way and other rivers. hopes it helps

Aw, man, we're heading over on the 20th... looks like I'm out of luck this time. Thank you kindly for your help, anyway.

*Edit - When I was looking on the DNR site I found this for Fannin Co:

Quote:
Seasonal: Charlie Creek watershed; Etowah River watershed; Jacks River watershed; Owenby Creek watershed; Persimmon Creek watershed; South Fork Rapier Mill Creek watershed; Star Creek watershed; Toccoa River tributary watersheds entering the river downstream from Blue Ridge Reservoir to the Georgia-Tennessee state line and upstream from the mouth of Stanley Creek except those listed as year-round; Tumbling Creek watershed; Wilscot Creek watershed.

Year-round: Conasauga River watershed (except Jacks River watershed); Ellijay River watershed; Fightingtown Creek watershed; Mountaintown Creek watershed; Noontootla Creek watershed; Rock Creek watershed; Rock Creek Lake; Toccoa River downstream from Lake Blue Ridge to the Georgia-Tennessee state line and upstream from the mouth of Stanley Creek (does not include tributaries unless listed).

So that means we'll be able to fish it before the 31st, right?

yea, anything that is year round is fishable anytime. You can also fish the DH = Delayed Harvest areas with special regulations. The Toccoa is year round so you should have no trouble. Have a great time
If you are fly fishing, stop by Unicoi Outfitters up there in Blue Ridge. They are great about letting you know what's happening and tips on what flies are good. Also, where to go.
