Hi All
I am seriously thinking of moving to GA or NC. Anywhere but Florida where the cost of living has tripled. I have 2 kids, 8 and 2 years old. Needless to say good schools and day care are my main priorities. I am a young mom and wife and I just want a nice safe place to call home.
My friend wants me to move to Dallas but I'm not sure if this is a good place to live. I dont get out much, maybe the movies or the park with the kids. I am looking for a place to settle down and live for some time and your opinons would be great. Thanks

One place I might suggest that is only about 45 minutes west of Dallas is Carrollton, where you will be out of the metro area. It seems to be a very family-friendly place, with Carroll County probably having around 75,000 people. But there are proposals for huge 20,000 home subdivisions within the south end of the county.

Columbus is a nice town to live in we have some really good schools the number 1 high school in the state is here. Its a growing town and i personally work at a daycare so I know first hand that we have good childcare as well.

Pooler/Port Wenworth, Georgia is the best city in Georgia, they are two different cities, but are within 2 minutes of each other, they both have great education, crime ranks amoung some of the lowest in Georgia. Both are great all around cities, and have close proximity to Savannah without having the crime, and low education, but close enough for a night on the town, or great activities, such as concerts, and other major events. Pooler/Port Wentworth both have great cost of livings, and houses are some of the most affordable in Georgia.

Columbus is nice but nowhere near Pooler, Carrollton is a little to small, and Athens is not family oriented, but more college oriented and could be bad for kids.

It may be easier to just list the cities to avoid:
1. Augusta
2. Albany
3. Hinesville
4. Dalton

Mayor,
How is Athens bad for kids? I thought the university adds stimulation and culture? We are thinking of relocating there.

jazzrose, The University adds party life to the mix. Athens is a town of renters during school and kind of dead during summer. The farther out you get from the Atlanta area, the more the schools and commute are worse. North Fulton, Gwinnett County, Cobb County, all these have better school systems and better quality of life. Pick an area and do research online...Bill

Hi! We are also Floridians looking for some relief further north, i.e. Georgia or No. Carolina. We will be driving thru the the northeast corner to check out the areas between Gainesville and Auburn next month. We would appreciate any info regarding jobs, climate (like s-n-o-w, brrrrr), taxes. Thanks for your help!
