Decatur is about 15-20 miles from Gwinnett County. I doubt that you can find an apt in your price range within the City of Decatur, which has an exceptionally effective school system. The area around Decatur is served by the DeKalb County School System and you will see 'Decatur' addresses/zipcodes listed in ads but be wary of this. Much of this area is transitional and the schools should be researched thoroughly as performance varies.

You need to network with other health care professionals.

Gwinnett's school system is the largest in the state and the schools are good, some excellent. Some parts of Gwinnett serve very diverse populations and contend with the challenges inherent to families in the lower economic strata.

The east side of Norcross, Lilburn and Duluth are included in the transitional part of Gwinnett. This extends from Buford Hwy to Beaver Ruin Rd, Jimmy Carter Blvd to I 85 and northward to Pleasant Hill Rd/Duluth. This is south Gwinnett County which is closer to Atlanta/Decatur.

My suggestion would be to look for housing in Peachtree Corners/west Norcross/Gwinnett County around Spalding Drive/Peachtree Industrial Blvd/Holcomb Bridge Rd. This section of Norcross is stable and elementary students attend Simpson Elementary and Norcross High School which is recognized as an excellent school.

The other possibility would be to search in Tucker, GA in DeKalb County. Tucker is about 15 minutes north of Decatur.
