Do you mean just across from Oconee County? Here's a map of Oconee County. Athens/Clarke county is above Oconee county so it looks like Bogart is the closest depending on what side you choose.

As far as to downtown Athens... I think Watkinsville is slightly closer. Oconee County is a suburb of Athens... more of a middle upper class deomographic, very white, very conservative, very different from the city of Athens. Based on some your criteria, I would not suggest Oconee County. I think you would probably like living in Athens more... you can go 5 miles from downtown and be in a rather rural environment if thats what you want.. but the more liberal progressive areas are going to be intown.

sure... you could get some land in Athens.. especially on the northside and near winterville and out Lexington Hwy on the eastside. You may want to consult the Athens-Clarke county school system on school info..
here is their website.
Clarke County School District

Yep.. its actually rather hilly..its similar to the terrain in Atlanta. Actually downtown Athens sits on a hill... the highest point in Clarke County I believe. It's really a charming town.. I think you will really like it.

School system in Athens-Clarke County is a disaster. Live in Oconee. Period.

Live in Oconee County if you have children. Otherwise, any where around Clarke County would put you in close proximity and short travel distance to Athens. Clarke is the smallest county, in terms of miles, in Ga.

I live in a community on the county line on highway 316 between Athens and Atlanta. My wife can get to Clarke shopping in 8 to 10 minutes and 35 minutes to shopping in North of Atlanta.

And to answer your specific question. No Oconee is not still Athens. A world of difference!
