Moving from NY to Lawrenceville - Which truck should I rent? (storage, trailer)

Hey guys,

I will be moving from Long Island, NY to Lawrenceville, GA with my wife and 5 month old son.

This is my first time driving a truck down out-of-state. We will get the second-to-largest size truck to fit everything we are moving with.

QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVELLING TO GA:

1). What truck (Ryder, Penske, etc) should I rent, and what size usually is best?

2). Anything I should know when driving these trucks on I-95S all the way down?

3). Do I have to enter the "weigh stations?"

4). I have 2 cars, and my brothers will help me drive them down. Is it best to drive them down, or, use should I use a attachment and drag the car(s) down with a trailer?

1.) I've personally had the best luck with u-haul but not all experiences renting with them have been good. Then again, it says right there on the truck, "Adventure in Moving" . And adventure is what you shall have. Ryder is commercial only. Budget doesn't honor their reservations, claiming you have too many tickets and the penske truck I once rented didn't work and the speed on their fleet is limited to 65 mph. OR at least it was. You may say what's the big deal, I'm not going to want to go faster... As slow as you go, there will always be someone who wants to go slower and you'll need enough speed to pass them without causing a log jam on the interstate. As for the size, it really depends on how many bedrooms but what I've found through numerous moves is if you have even a little doubt, get the biggest truck you can. You won't regret it. What you will regret is if you run out of space and have to go back and get a bigger truck.

3.) I'm not certain. The last time I had used one that passed a weigh station, I stopped, they asked me what was in the back and they waived me through.

4.) If you ask me, it's better to drive them if they're in good enough condition to do so. But now that you mention it, if you have towing hitches on your cars, why not rent a trailer so you can get a smaller truck, pay less or maybe not even need a truck at all?

I've posted bits and pieces of my U-Haul moving story here before.

We made it in one piece, but the next time we move (if we move) long distance I don't know that I will be using U-Haul again.

You CAN request a new truck.
Go through the local corporate owned u-haul center and ask for the newest truck they got.
Last time I did that, they gave me a brand new one never even rented before.

I'm a big fan of their trailers. They're built like tanks. And you dont have to worry about some old truck lbreaking down.

Another nice thing about u-haul is the really low deck height of their trucks. and extra storage in "momma's attic" above the cab.
