I don't mean this in any sarchastic way, but I've never heard of a "Masters in Administration". I'm familiar with Masters in Business Administration; Masters in Health Care Administration, but not just a Masters in Administration.

The reason I mention this is because it would seem to make a difference in where you would look to live, based on the type of jobs people with your degree generally seek. Most masters degrees indicate "specialist", and jobs employing specialist skills are really only available in larger cities, like Atlanta, Chatanooga, Jacksonville, etc.

Personally, I'd worry less about the racial makeup of a city and focus on which sector has a need for the services you offer. If an employer doesn't know what you spent your precious time studying and hard earned money going to school for, he's not going to hire you. If you cold pick your ideal employer and define your own job duties, who would you pick and what would you want to do for that employer?

Answer that first, then go for it wherever it might be, within reason.

Well You Are Absolutely Right! I Have A Master's In Public Administration. I Am Presently A Supervisor At A Hospital In New York. My Husband And I Wanted To Start Our Own Business But We Are Tired Of City And Wanted To Start Over In A Small Town Like St. Mary's But We Heard That There Is Alot Of Racial Tension In Georgia And We Wanted To Be In An Area Where We Would Be Comfortable. I Know That St. Mary's Is Approximately Thirty Min From Jax And The Job Market There Is Not That Bad From What I Heard.

St. Mary's is more than 30 minutes from Jacksonville. I'd say it's at least one hour. There is no real easy way to get From St. Mary's to Jacksonville, due to rivers that seperate Georgia and Florida up around that area. I've never thought of St. Mary's as having anything to do with Florida. I go to Fernendina Beach and Amilia Island for R&R about once a year, and usually find it too difficult to get over to St. Mary's. It seems close, but it's a pain to get over there, and I'm lazy when I'm on R&R.

As far as racial "tension" in Gerogia goes, I wouldn't characterize it that way. I'd say there's quite a bit less tension in most parts of Georgia than in Northern states. However, in many rural areas of Georgia there are distinct "white" areas and "black" areas. The races do tend to be more seperated, I suppose - but black folks and white folks tend to get along with each other more often than not in the Georgia's smaller towns. I'd say that Atlanta probably has more racial tension around it than any other city in Georgia.

I'm white, but that's just the way I tend to see it. I'm sure there are those with differing opinons from me, though. Best of luck to you and your husband in your search for the city that best fits you.

I Want To Thank You For Taking Out The Time To Post A Reply. You Mentioned That There Are Black And White Areas Of Georgia Which Counties In Georgia Are Considered Black ? What Do You Consider St. Mary's To Be ? Can You Suggest Other Counties In Georgia That Are Fairly Mixed ? Is It True That North Georgia Is Better Than South Georgia ?

The counties in the North Georgia Mountain region have very few Blacks in them.

The Greator Atlanta area can roughly be catagorized as Black on the south side and White on the north side. However, there are many areas in the North and East areas where affluent Blacks live in predominantly white neighborhoods without any obvious racial issues.

In South Georgia, most small towns have a "black" side and a "white" side to them. I really don't know if there are counties that are more or less black than others in South Georgia. Of course my statemsnts are just very broad generalizations which have many exceptions to them, but that seems sort of to be what you are asking for. As far as St. Mary's is concerned, I've never thought of it in terms of race. I guess I consider it to be somewhat tourist/historical and somewhat military town because of the Navy Base there.

If you were planning on moving to parts of Forsyth county or some of the small mountain towns in North Georgia, then you might be right to be concerned about race. But, I think you're a little overly concerned about it with regard to St. Mary's.

Perhaps take a little trip to Savanah and St. Mary's would be more helpful than what we could tell you. I just don't think race is as big as a concern that you might think it is.

Yes, if you haven't already seen it, there's lots of statistical data to be found right here on: City-Data's St. Marys Information Page

Unfortunately race is one of the many things African Americans must consider when relocating because things have not really changed for us. There are certain places that are not safe for us to live. Thanks so much for the information it has been very helpful.

I am afraid nowadays that the places that are unsafe for African-Americans to live would be unsafe for anyone to live in.

The cities that are divided along racial lines are the remnants of a time when our cultures were more strongly divided. Many of those areas have gotten worse instead of better because those who can afford to leave have left and those who couldn't are finding themselves surrounded by terrible poverty and crime.

I would never recommend that you seek out any African-American neighborhood to live in unless it is middle class and above. It really is about economics these days.

Talking about race is very difficult to do gracefully or well. We are all in this together. Hopefully you will find a place that makes you happy.

I was suspect before but
I for one am convinced this is another hoax. A five bedroom house for two people (no kids) and yet 4 days ago (20th) still knew nothig of the area. The questions and the "phrasing" don't ring true. Who considers buying a house but has no knowledge of house keeping, landscaping and has no immediate job prospects ??

Arizona_Chic...is this you ??
