Does Anyone Know The Percentage Of African Americans In St. Mary's And What Class Are They ? I Am An African American Female Relocating From Ny To St. Mary's With My Husband And I Wanted To Know If I Would Fit In This Community Or Should I Relocate To Other Parts Of Georgia ? I Don't Want My Husband And I To Be An Outcast.

That info is right here on city-data...it's listed as 20%. I was in St. Marys and Kingsland about 3 weeks ago. The one thing I did notice is that there is a a pretty clear white side and a black side of town. This comment is not to cast any dispersions upon the state of Ga. or St.Marys etc but that's just the facts. The "black" area seemed to be clustered around the old paper mill on the north end of town and from ALL appearences was NOT, I repeat ,NOT a very economically nice area. VERY run down small homes in need of a complete teardown and replacement.

I spoke to a few locals and there dosen't appear to be any real local job market. Brunswick to the north or Jacksonville Fl. to the south is where work is to be found. The local economy is almost non-exisitant.

If that is directed to me I can't help you there much. I'm from NJ I only made the previous comment because I was just in that location and could provide an up to date informed observation on that area. I can tell you that I was also on St.Simons and Jekyll Island. Both are beautiful but pricey locations. I wouldn't hesitate to settle down in either place.

As many people would agree, don't move before you have a job. Do you already have a job in St. Mary's?

You will probably fit in anywhere, but your chances of meeting a diverse group of people will be greater in larger cities.

Maybe you should contact the local chamber of commerce.

On the off chance that you haven't seen it, try this link.

The Link Was Very Helpful Thank You For The Heads Up. I Did Not Think That It Will Be So Hard To Relocate To Another State. Do You Have Anyother Suggestions In Re: To St. Mary's Or Relocation Itself !!

Not a whole lot of specific info.

Have you considered Beaufort, SC? It has a great African-American history and a diverse population because of the Marine base. There might be better job opportunities there than St. Mary's.

Hopefully someone else will be able to help you more.
