My relative has a mental disorder and they are going to graduate from college soon. This person has also been institutionalized at some point. Will an employment background check include these medical records about their disorder and treatment for it? Will the fact that they have been institutionalized be on their background check. I really don't want them to not be able to get a job because they are doing well now.

Yes it will show. It wont show details however. He will likely be asked to provide further information about it so it is not an automatic disqualifier, unless he wants to become a driver or something like that

bg checks pool state and sometimes federal data on health and criminal records.

it is my understanding that medical records are secret.

Why don't you ask your doctor or call the institution.

However, one credit agency shows every previous address that was reported to a bank etc so if they used the address of the institution for banking it would show up on one credit report.

mental health institutions are not covered under medical privacy in the same way as doctor patient rights. of course it doesnt list your health history but it shows you've been in one. or at least should. typically it doesnt unless specifically requested. its a mess depending on which systems they query (and can query. different if you are seeking employment at your county court vs 711)
