I know you are only required to have a license plate in back of the car, but are you allowed to put another State's license plate (that has EXPIRED) in front of the car? is it legal or illegal and how can I find out other than calling the DMV?

thanks

Call the DMV, or look up on line at the Georgia vehicle licensing web site.

Actually, in GA it is perfectly LEGAL to have another state's plate on the front of your car, as long as your GA registration is up to date and the plate on the back is a legal GA plate.

I confirmed this with a cop, and you will see many people (I'm not one of them) with their old plates from both GA and other states on the front of the car. Now, if/when you go to another state, including the state whose plate you have on the front, you may not be legal and may be subject to penalties.

Personally, I don't get the one plate thing anyway. License plates are for identifying the vehicle. When there is no plate on the front, it makes that mission more difficult and prevents people from getting a plate number under certain circumstances. When you have an old plate from another state on the front of your car, it opens up the possibility of misindentification or someone not looking at the correct plate. It just serves to defeat the purpose of the license plates.

I would be in favor of all states having 2 plates to avoid any confusion.

It's perfectly legal in Georgia (I called and asked), and I also asked the State of Minnesota if they minded if I had an expired MN license plate on my car here in Georgia. They didn't have an issue with it, either.

On the rear of the vehicle, perhaps.

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Neil on the two license plates in all 50 states issue. It SHOULD be implemented in every state. It makes perfectly good sense.

Ditto...I have my expired New York license plate on the front of my car. But, it's removed before I go back home to NYS.

A front license plate ruins the look of some cars IMO (especially sports cars). Many cars don't even have the bracket for them.

Every car has a bracket for them. I lived in a state with front plates and it's not a problem. All cars come from the mfg with a front bracket. They just don't get put on in one plate states.

As for the look of the car, you may be right, but that's not a good enough reason. I think the reason the southern states don't have front plates is cost related. At some point in the past, the southern states and the couple of other states outside the south that only use one plate decided it cost half as much to only use one plate. There is no other reason that makes sense.
