Aiken was the winter residence of many of America's wealthy families (i.e, Whitney's, Hitchcock's) for generations. It's quaint, quiet yet upscale. They still play polo in Aiken in addition to horse racing. The mix of old oaks, dripping with spanish moss, and the palmetto trees reminds you that you're just a couple of hours to the coast.

Default Thanks and a little more info

I appreciate the replies. I am looking for modest priced housing, upscale it doesn't need to be. I have been on the RE sites and there seems to be enough for sale in my price range in the SC/GA areas from Aiken to Augusta. I lived in the Triangle in NC, Ral/Dur/CH, and although the area was cool, lots to do, the crime was high and the place was discovered already and growing uncontrollably, Martha Stewart developing in a Raleigh suburb spells the end of my interest in a place. I like to cycle, hike and see/hear music, art and thearter. I like a historic towns with reclaimation of mills and older neighborhoods, and stay away from malls, military complexes and gated communities. A college town is desireable since I think you get the cultural benefits. I thought Aiken would be suitable but since I have never been there I hoped to get a feel of what it is like from this forum. I plan to come down soon and spend some time touring the area so I am looking for suggestions. Thanks for all your help.
