I just moved to Georgia - my fiance lives in NC still (I have a GA license and she has a NC license) - her car is in her parents name and they are giving it to us - the car has a NC license plate currently

What are the costs associated with the gift? Do we need to pay a gift/sales tax on it? Are there extra costs that go with putting the car in her name or mine because we are technically residents of different states currently?

I'm wondering what is the easiest/cheapest process - thanks in advance

There shouldn't be any taxes associated with the gift. When you transfer the title the seller (your new inlaws) will have to declare the sale price of the vehicle. Since you didn't pay anything for it you just declare $0. If you didn't pay anything for the car you won't have to pay taxes (I've actually done this before with success, but in another state). I believe you are required to claim gifts on your tax return but I'm not sure how they would find out about that.

Thank you for your quick reply. So we can transfer it without any trouble it sounds like to me, currently - or my fiance once she gets a GA license and avoid paying any sort of sales tax on the car while avoiding having to register it in NC for the week she will still be a NC resident

I couldn't seem to find anything other than the following link which is pretty vague.
Cobb County

I wouldn't register it in NC for a week. You should be able to get yourself a temp tag for that time period and lower your costs. Check: MVD | Registration Index Motor Vehicle Division (http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/registration/ - broken link) for info on registering in GA.
