Hi everyone - DH has a great opportunity in Gainesville, and we currently live in NE Cobb. The commute will be 1+ hours each way for him from where we live now. As he travels at least 50% of the time, access to the airport is pretty important too. We have spent a little time looking around Gainesville and Flowery Branch, and are seriously wondering whether moving is worth it, the area seems pretty beaten down by the recession, lots of empty buildings and shop-fronts. Our local schools are pretty good (Lassiter), and I wonder how the schools will compare? Perhaps Alpharetta will bring us a bit closer, and give us a better airport commute as well as better schools. Any input at all will be very much appreciated.

1 year ago i would have told you to move with both hands and feet. right now like you said it, that area got smothered by i dont know what.. not even the recession. I still cannot get around how much it's downgraded itself.

Lassiter.. won't find anything better on that side of town short of buford city hs. west hall is also good but not better.

if schools are your priority, stay where you are

Hello from Gainesville.

In a word, don't move here. Gainesville is like night and day from Cobb County. The schools are getting worse and we have gang issues. There is an alarming amount of empty retail here and a complete lack of good restaurants. The real estate market is dead here unless you are selling a house for $85-120k.
Over 55% of students here are on free/reduced lunch.

If you want to move closer, I would consider somewhere other than Gainesville. I have a friend over in Acworth and it seems much better in that area.

I commute to Gainesville from Suwanee. It takes about 30 minutes, and allows me to still be in a nice suburb within metro Atlanta with good schools.

So you are one of the people that turned 985 into 575! Thanks.

My family was out yesterday and I noticed new gang "tags" all over in the "good" area of town. Sur-13 on the sign out front of the small plaza where we usually eat lunch and then the entire side and front of the boarded up Sonic building was painted. The front window was also broken out and there was glass all over the ground. (looked like someone tried to tunnel in)

This is very upsetting to me and I wonder if we will ever get out of here?

I would commute from Suwanee in a heartbeat!!!!! It's supposed to be nice down there.

Was the Sur 13 tag on the sign in front of the Moe's and Firehouse subs? If so, I noticed that today. Pretty brazen...

Yep, that was part of it.

I can't believe law enforcement is letting that stay up this long! Did you see the Sonic around the corner? Way worse than that.

If you want to keep these gangs in check, you have to clean up that kind of thing right away. I figured they didn't get to it because it was over the weekend.

I also saw a lot of graffitti behind the Monkey Joe's when I missed the turn and had to turn around back there 2 years ago. My friend says Oakwood has gone down the tubes also.
