My husband and I are Planning on relocating to Georgia, once I am finished with nursing school next year (and incredibly excited about it!) We have two children, and we want to rent first, so that we are sure we like the area. We also have 2 dogs so ideally would like to rent a house ...any areas recommended? We want to be close to Atlanta, and we're thinking Decatur is a good choice because of the close proximity to CHOA, and other healthcare facilities. I have a couple questions about the area that I'm hoping someone can help with.

What are the schools in Decatur like? We have two toddlers, so this is my biggest concern.

Is there a lot of crime since it's so close to Atlanta?

What kind of activities are there to do for families?

What kind of shopping is available? Malls? Target?

I'd appreciate any input....thank you!

Personally I don't really like Decatur. If you look around the Peachtree Corners area of Norcross it is way better and it's a hop to I-285 and I-85 which will get you to downtown Atlanta in under 30 minutes. Also it's a hop to Lake Lanier if you want to get out of the hustle and bustle

The atlanta forum is a better place to post your question. This is the general Georgia forum.

It is a lovely community, and very child-friendly. The park by my house is always packed with toddlers, their parents and their nannies when the weather is good. One thing to understand, though; when people normally discuss 'Decatur' on here, they are referring to the actual city (zip 30030), not the unincorporated areas outside of it with a Decatur mailing address.
City of Decatur schools are very well regarded.

Is there a lot of crime since it's so close to Atlanta?

No, I've never had a problem. The city has a very reliable police department. I think the conventional wisdom among criminals is that Decatur is not a good place to do business.

What kind of activities are there to do for families?

Plenty. Decatur has several family-oriented festivals in its' downtown area every year, most notably their annual 'beach party' which has been a big hit for years.

Decatur Events

Also, Decatur operates several great parks and recreational facilties. The Glenlake Pool and Tennis Center is great, and Decatur has one of the best YMCA facilities I've seen.

What kind of shopping is available? Malls? Target?

Decatur has worked for years to retain its' 'villagey' feel, so 'big box' has been restricted in favor of 'mom and pop' type shopping. However, there are two Targets within a 10 minute drive of the city limits, and several malls are also a short drive away.
