Not only do a lot of county's not have public transportation ( I am not speaking about taxi, nobody is going to take the taxi every day, let's be realistic) but the ones that do are useless. Some only pass by every hour or so, some like in Clayton County, C Tran is shutting down so these people have to quit their jobs.

Where are the entrepreneurs?

In Central America they use our old school buses to transport people around the cities and country, and if that's too pricey for you, you can go down one more rung in the ladder, and ride in the backs of pick-ups with bars in the back to hold on to during your ride.

The Hispanic's grew up with this type of mass transit. Perhaps it will be the entrepreneurial Hispanic's who will duplicate these cheap services up here in our country.

And vendors hopping on and off the buses, along the way, to sell you everything from fried chicken to toiletries.

It couldn't come soon enough, scrap the public transit systems, and let the entrepreneurs take over.

MARTA works just fine for me.

Trains every 10 minutes or so.

Bus passes in front of my house every 15 minutes.

Do we really want to turn the US and Atlanta into the third world? I fear that's where we're headed in any event, but should we be advocating for it? In India, they ride on top of trains and hang off the sides...do we want to do that too?

That's what happens when people depend upon a highly subsidized system, and, when the revenues go away, the subsidies no longer exist, that system goes away. There was a story tonight that even if the fares were doubled the system would still have to shut down.

Yes, yes, yes, yes!!! When I get off the plane in San Salvador or Guatemala City, I can't race fast enough to my first chicken bus, or hop on the back of a pick-up and let the wind blow against my body for an extended trip. Oh what a rush!

This beneficial dimension of the third world couldn't come to this borderline third world country quick enough. With a duplicate competitive system like they have down south, the poor will never have to struggle again to keep a car running and they'll get to work on time, each and every day. Ran out of the house one morning, not enough time to eat, no worry, as the vendors ply these bus routes religiously, selling sandwiches, hot food, candy en route.
Other vendors sell everything imaginable on these routes, and when you get home, your shopping has been done on the bus.

It's time to stop shipping our old school buses down there and reuse them up here. And all those single driver pick-ups roaming our streets up here with no passengers in the back, something wrong up here!

a majority of Ga's counties have public transportation.
rural public transportation.
yea its subsidized. and the primary users are the elderly and disabled. at least some mobility is a basic need for these people. they are aging at home. or would you rather have them move to the big s*** city?
This issue is kind of like the issue that one of our stupid former GA governors chose to ignore. he said well if all those people in rural areas are unemployed why dont they move to atlanta? minimal education and skills. yea, sure Joe Frank, just where would they find housing? DUH?
