Mad,

Your information for Georgia.

Property taxes vary by county as your know. Atlanta will bring the most costly.
The worst is Alpharetta (Fulton County). Alpharetta is a nice area. Fulton is Atlanta City.
Gwinnett County where I live (pop. 750k+) offers lower taxes in the Atlanta area due to its industrial base. A 3,000 sq ft home in a nice neighborhood can run up to 3k per year. That is a blessing considering when I lived in Chicago and Jersey I was paying 8k+ per year.

Sales taxes. Georgia's rate is 4% Counties add to it. Average you will find is 6-7% sales tax with the local of food of 1-2%. GA does not tax food.

Don't let the job market fool you. Not all jobs pay less. Heck I make more in Atlanta than I did in Chicago. Depending upon your experience, skill, and education level, the job market here is what you make it.

Car insurance in the Atlanta area is higher due to all the maniac's on the road. Of all the cities I have lived (Philly, NJ, Chicago) I have not seen anything like this. You have the New Yorkers in a hurry and the Rednecks trying out for NASCAR, thus the higher rates. Still, no worse than any other metro area. There is a millage rate on cars. Tag fee is $20.00 per year plus a personal property tax. My car ran $242.00 this year.

Income tax is 6% over 17K per year. This will be your big difference from Florida without a state income tax.

Overall in getting the most for your money? I have lived in the following states with my job:
West Virginia
Virginia
New Jersey
Illinois
and now Georgia.

So far, even West Virginia included, Georgia has provided the largest bang for the buck and the most economical compared to the others.

Hope this helps, if so, click below

Regards,

Oh God! Maryland!
I grew up 10 miles from the Maryland border by Hagersbush.
I could never understand their slogan, "The Free State"
Nothing in Maryland is FREE!

Love Maryland but their taxes are plain robbery. They are the only state left with the "piggyback" tax.

We're in Columbus and have found while my husband's job paid $10K more a year here; we only see $200 a month more after taxes. Rent is higher here for a smaller house than our mortgage for 1000 more square feet and 25 year newer home was. But YMMV because Dallas in my experience was relatively inexpensive to live in. Our car insurance did stay about the same though groceries are more (I attribute that to increasing gas prices country-wide though).
