Hey all, I have recently obtained a position at UGA and my wife and I will be moving there in August. We are in our late 20s, so still looking for a little fun. Also, my wife needs some selling on the city of Athens, so I was wondering a good place to rent an apartment. I've heard Five Points and something downtown would be good for a young couple, but that is just through word of mouth. Thanks for the information, and if anyone can point me to someone to speak to I appreciate that as well. We are likely looking for a short term rental (month to month, a semester, or a year at the longest...prefer the shortest possible).

5 points is nice...also check out the Boulevard area and Normaltown. These areas are nice and more affordable than five points (not that you can't find a good deal there either.). If you're working at UGA five points would allow you easy walking/biking access to campus.

A good source of apt classifieds aside from Craigslist is flagpole.com (the Athens free weekly). It's also a good indicator of what's going on around town. Good luck on your search!

Hey, a fellow future UGA family. What will you be studying?

I spoke with a professor when we were down for a visit a couple of weeks ago. She told me that apartments further away from campus were the way to go (better maintained).

Mathematics Education here. And you? I'm very excited to join UGA.

I was told similar things from the faculty members, unless you can find a nice house to rent.

Hispanic Linguistics here. I'm excited as well. (BTW, my wife is a math teacher, so she and you have that in common.)

Our sole mission was to find a house (well, anything not an apartment) when we were searching the area. We found a townhouse community south of downtown that looks like it will fit our needs.

Athens is awash in rentals. I would NOT rent anything along Hwy 78 the entire length of the road from one side of the county to the other. I would likely look at South Milledge all the way out to almost the Botanical Garden entrance. You can catch the bus on that stretch.

There is also much for rent right now on Milledge around 5 Points. There are also apartments on 441 South which you might find ok.

The sad fact of the matter is, you can find yourself in a thug area if you are not very careful.

You can search this forum re: Athens and find a lot of previous material.

You will like 5 Points, and Milledge Ave around 5 Points. Athens is very nice town (for anyone needing some selling regarding the town), especially the University. I used to live in Athens for several years. It is called the "best seat in the south"!

papilgee4evaeva and kmzipsgolf - I will send you a direct message shortly.

Here is the big question. What do you want to be close to? Do you want to be close to a bus line, to downtown, to open space, to shopping, to dining. Do you want quiet, party place, pool, tennis, dog friendly, etc. There is a lot available here in Athens, and around it. Find some temporary place for a couple of weeks and familiarize yourself with the area, if you have the budget, before renting. Also, you need to consider your budget, there are bargains, but, you get what you pay for. Find a good agent that can help you find the right place for you.

Athens is a nice college town. I agree with previous posts about the area in general. It has its good and negative qualities. I lived in East Athens in a subdivision that was quiet and family oriented. I 'm not that familiar with rentals in the area. I lived in Athens for three years and I met people who were born and raised there and they often had a different more negative opinion on Athens. I lived in a subdivision with lots of other families that were transplants to Athens and most of us enjoyed the town and what it has to offer. It has some nice parks and restaurants. It's big enough to not know everyone in town but yet it has that small town charm to it. I was not a big fan when I first moved to Athens but after I was able to experience the things it had to offer it was nice. I agree that you have to find the right location and talk to someone who is very knowledgable about the city. That's what we did and we got into a great neighborhood close to all the amenities that were important to us.
