First, would you describe Athens as a friendly, welcoming city? I would also like to know where most of the university professors live: Athens or Watkinsville? If Athens, east or west sides?

Thinking of Athens And the Watkinsville areas, moved to the Raleigh area last year after an early retirement and sorry to say it was a mistake landing in Wake County NC from New Jersey. That said I was able to cash out of the NJ market at the right time. Now I am thinking we should have moved to this part of GA in the first place!

Am I nuts? I know I can sell the house we bought here in NC for about 20K more than I paid. Then Cash of over 300K for a house. Where though?

That's okay, you can hijack my post. No problem. Seriously speaking, I am trying to learn more about the area. Have you visited yet? Thoughts?

Athens is a College town and pretty diverse. They are friendly but you get the "student influence". As far as where the prof's live...all over. Oconee county is known as a "bedroom community". Many of the prof's live outside Athens. I have one living down the road from me outside of Jefferson he breeds Percherons. Most people who live in the area are also looking for certain types of outdoor activity. Horses, Hunting, Fishing ect. The commute up here is pretty eazy from one small community to another.

Thanks for the info. Any idea why the Athens schools are not very good? I'm surprised considering how educated the population is.
