We live in northern Cailfornia - pretty, nice climate and my contractor husband has been able to find a smattering of work this year (hardly any last year) but not enough to keep up with accumulated bills and mortgage. We may have an opportunity to get a year's worth of work at Lake Lanier with ability to trade his work for a home in Suwanee. We were actually researching Georgia and Alabama for relocation because we have family in Georgia. However, upon reading some of the posts in this forum, it seems that the Suwanee area (Gwinett County) is a nightmare of urban sprawl and unplanned growth! We are trying to get away from the hectic California pace so would we be coming out of the frying pan and into the fire? I'm very intersted in opinions on this!

Suwanee is one of the nicest suburbs on the NE side of the metro. There has been A LOT of growth there, but as far as sprawly and unplanned, I don't think that is totally accurate. Besides, a lot of that "sprawl" is hidden behind the heavily wooded areas that still remain.

You could do a lot worse.

Many people characterize metro Atlanta in general as "a nightmare of urban sprawl and unplanned growth," but Suwanee is actually one of the better areas.

I'll third that. Suwanee came a bit late to the game relative to other Gwinnett communities that grew rapidly; as a result, they benefited from a lesson in 'what not to do' as far as planning (or lack thereof) goes. Suwanee has built a lovely town center and if you do a thread search on 'Suwanee' here, you'll find that as a suburb it generally gets high marks from Atlantans.

Yep for you- it is frying pan into fire. You'll be in shock and you need to visit first. However once you adjust it's a good place to live. CA is tough to give up, GA doesn't compare but the future here is much better.
