Hi everyone! Is this a good time to relocate? I have been trying to get to GA in the Atlanta area for the past year. I have decided that I am tired of the high cost of living in Florida. We have two toddlers, struggling month to month. I have come to the conclusion that the only way we will be able to get ahead is by relocating. I want to raise my kids in a better environment and the cost of living is much better than FL. I have been to GA 6 times in the last 8 months. I did one job fair, and some apartment and house search while up there. I am real serious about the move but it seems like there are no jobs and I don't know if this is a good time to relocate. New to the whole relocating thing, any information will be helpful. Interested in McDonough, Love joy, or south west out skirts of ATL.

I don't know....is it? Do you have a job lined up or sufficient cash in the bank to support your family for at least a year?

No one on the forum can answer your question. Only you know if it's a good time to relocate. I can tell you that Georgia stil has a 10.4% unemployment rate, and if you don't have an education and/or specific skill that's in demand, it may be difficult to find a job right now.

Doesn't sound like it. If you're already struggling, moving with two kids, no jobs, etc., will only make things worse, IMO.

I am curious about a similar issue. I was just informed today that i was accepted for a job transfer to Atlanta. My new job location is 230 Peachtree NW Fulton County. I think this may be located near the airport. I am interested in moving to a mixed area in which i do not have to commute more than 1/2 hour to the job. I am a single woman with a 17 yo son. I would like to begin looking for an apartment or be able to rent until i get a better feel of the area.
I make 80, 000 yearly and would like to know what you would suggest. Eventually, i'd like to buy a home and be able to enjoy the city life as well. Please advise. I'm new at this. Thanks!

NewBeginning - as far as home ownership, it's a great time for people looking to buy, as prices are so low... as far as the employment, well, not sure anyone can answer that one!

Tashak - you'll have to do your homework - there are areas around town that are decent, but you might want to keep an eye on some of the morning/afternoon traffic reports and learn the freeways (not many of them are smooth sailing during rush hour!) and yes, renting is a good idea, so that you've got time to look around and see before making a home purchase...

welcome to Georgia, ya'll!!

Thanks everyone for your comments, every comment was real helpful. I will not leave until there is income for the both of us b/c I do not want to go there struggling like I am here. I don't expect living to be perfect when we relocate but it has got to be better than here.
We are saving. A year income, whooa I wish, no I don't think I will have that much unless I go and stay with moms for a while.

Tashak seems like you're ready! Peachtree is a real nice area wish you the best of luck with your transition! Do some research and visit on a weekend and check the area out!

The recommendation is based on what it could take to find a job, not to mention that moving itself can be expensive. It's a good idea to have at least 6 months in cash reserves under any circumstances.

You do realize GA has a state income tax; ad valorem taxes on vehicles; emissions testing in and around Atlanta; very high crime in Atlanta; incompetent city government in Atlanta; brain damaging traffic issues; water supply to Atlanta to be cut off in another 2 years or less (Lake Lanier); massive unemployment; low wages and so on and on. When you say the COL is lower in GA, you might want to check into that closer. All counties can be significantly different on ad valorem taxes and property taxes. Take nothing for granted.
