Hello,

My name is Katie, I am a 24 yr old that is in a relationship. My boyfriend and I just moved from the east side of the state to the west side. We are very happy with our new home here on the west side but we don't have really any friends over here. I am a field worker that works out of my home for my company that is based in Warren, MI. I was relocated by taking a great job opportunity. Although, My boyfriend and I, we love each other but we defiantly like to meet some other people to go out with to build friendships with. I never have used the internet to meet people but being that the people that I see on a daily basis are 65+ it makes it hard for me to meet people my age. I find approaching people asking to hang out that I have never talked to before to be a little hard for me.. and I do PUBLIC speaking . I guess I am afraid of looking like a desperate wacko! I am not sure if this is any different. Does anyone have of any ideas of meeting new people that doesn't include going back to school and/or joining a church. Any options we are willing to try.

Thanks for your help!

Grand Rapids Young Professionals (GRYP - www.gryp.org) is an excellent place to meet people. They have a facebook group too. I have met countless good folks through this organization.

There are also a myriad of events and exhibits to meet people at in GR. If you volunteer at any of these places, such as gallery events/openings etc, you will likely meet more than your fare share of people your own age. I find GR+surrounding residents typically very friendly and easy to converse with especially if it's a first time meeting them.

Thank you for your help. I will look into this! I never realized how much I counted on my friends until I moved out here

GRYP is a pretty good thing to be involved in, lots of good people.

You might also want to check out ArtPrize. If you aren't familiar with it, it is a huge public art contest. Supposedly the biggest in the world. Anyway they always need volunteers and there seem to be a good amount of people 20-25 working the fair. It's downtown and after it's huge success last year it is the "cool" thing to do now

How did you make all your friends on the other side of the state?
I think in life most friends come through associations (school, church, work) of one sort or another.

So GRYP is a great suggestion as mentioned above.
You might also consider joining a sports league (soccer, bowling, whatever you like) as that seems to be where many of my mid-20s friends are headed after work.

Where you live also helps right? Do you have neighbors that are your age? Have a block party, invite the whole block. People of a similar age will naturally gravitate to each other anyway, and you'll meet neighbors that are your age.

I agree, it's hard to move to a new place... we went through the same thing 5 years ago when we moved here with no ties.
