Other cities in Upstate NY like Elmira, Utica and Binghamton kind of feel the same pain, but they may at least have college stations that play urban music or can get stations from Syracuse or Ithaca. Buffalo actually has 3 or 4 and Rochester and Albany have 2. So, it is a similar situation to MI here in Upstate NY.
Not sure about Lansing. But Detroit has alot, Chicago has alot, and west MI is about 2-3 hours from both. Just enough to be out of range to hear the stations from either city clearly but too close to have a large enough radius to cover the whole section of western MI. I think being right in between 2 major cities that close together and Indiana puts west MI at a disadvantage. The metro areas in the western part of the state are much smaller, hence the reason why they feel no need to cover as large of an area. Especially since you can only go an hour east or west before you start interfering with other radio stations.

That should have nothing to do with it. Lansing does have a station and u can get it as sion as u leave Kent county flint and Saginaw has a station. It is no reason whatsover that gr does nit have a station. Gr is probably one of the largest cities or metros in the nation without a urban station. Which is one reason gr is unbearable for african Americans. For Caucasians gr is a great place to live great downtown thriving for blacks. It us terrible and mist try to leave when they can.

Grand Rapids did have an urban FM station not that long ago. But the community didn't support it so it went under. Can't run a radio station without advertisers.

Grand rapids has never had a urban radio station. I moved from gr 2 years ago. And the only thing is 104.5. I'm still in tune to what's going on. I visit family there often a couple times a year

That's more like a pop station. Matterfact, the so called "urban" station in LA reminded me of 104.5. I love LA but God their stations are disappointing.

94.9, WYGR I believe. I thought they had gone out because they had moved from their location in Baxter, but they're still broadcasting. 104.5 is basically pop with a lot of mainstream hip-hop thrown in.

Tell your family to help them find some advertisers and maybe they can upgrade.
