And their isnt any bad places in Grand Rapids. And I say that because people from all races can go anywhere anytime in the city of Grand rapids and feel safe.

The crime that goes on now is mostly related. Its not like you go to wrong part of town and you will get robbed or something unless your looking weak and scared and people can see right through that
What planet are you on? I've lived here since 64, and there are still areas in this city I would not go into without being heavily armed and with a police escort.

And yes, there are areas to avoid at night.

Best place to be is outside GR city limits and into the suburbs.

That's just crazy talk. 95% of Grand Rapids is safe and occupied. Whereas 50% of Detroit is vacant.

lol...GR 95% safe huh?....THAT'S crazy talk

not all of detroit is vacant, sir

just most of the slums...

if you ask me, flint is worse than both.

all three cities keep crime rates 2-3x higher than national average so its foolish to believe 95% of grand ragedy is safe.

50% of Detroit IS vacant. I've spent a lot of time in the city of Detroit this past year. Its peak population was 1.85 Million, it's now at 712,000. In fact, that's less than half.

Grand Rapids is still about where it has been for 30 years (about 190,000), and there are only a couple of areas where I would not venture out alone. Look up the GR crime stats. Most of it is domestic/fights where the people know each other, or break-ins.

I'm not saying I'd want to LIVE in 95% of Grand Rapids, but it's certainly safe to walk through or visit friends/family.

Just the same, I would take more of a risk walking around GR than Detroit. Grand Rapids had 9 murders in 2010, giving it a murder rate of 4.7 murders per 100,000. Detroit had 310 murders, giving it a murder rate of 34.5 murders per 100,000, much more dangerous that Atlanta. If I can walk around some parts of Atlanta alone, then Grand Rapids would be even safer.

I think that the demographics of the near SE side of GR is kind of similar to the Demographics of the City of Detroit. Most of the interest for people relocating to the City of GR proper seems to be in the near SE side. Thus, for all intents and purposes, the crime stats for the near SE side is whats germane.

What difference does it make what the crime stats are for an overall city? The only thing that matters is the crime stats in the particulary area of a city you plan on being in. General crime stats are useless because people generally reside in or frequent particular areas. I lived in both Grand Rapids and Detroit and the particular area that I lived in Grand Rapids was worse than the particular area that I lived in Detroit.

Nationally the violent crime rate, due to historical causes, in the black community is much higher than the crime rate in the white community nationally. Hence, when whites flee a city, leaving the city majority black, then the crime rates for the city rise because it reflects the higher rate of violent crime in the black community. Its not that Detroit is much rougher than Grand Rapids, its that Grand Rapids is much whiter than Detroit. If 500,000 whites moved into the city of Detroit, the per capita crime rate would plummet even though the amount of violence in the black community would remain the same.

Grand Rapids black community has about the same rate of crime as Detroits black community but Grand Rapids massive white community low crime rate offsets the high crime rates in GR's smaller black community. In all honesty, I think white people are way to paranoid about crime especially in places like Detroit. If the only crimes that were reported and recorded were randome crimes, then people would realize that 2 people getting killed in a drug house 3 miles away is in no way a threat to them. I lived on a street where there were numerous drug houses and murders and I never really felt unsafe in our home.

Really? Sounds like a war zone. What areas would those be? I've lived in or visited friends / family all over GR but have never been in such an area where I've felt that unsafe. And I don't carry as much as a pocket knife.

I have been in areas where I personally wouldn't rent or buy a house. But the people I know who live or work in those areas never seem to have an issue.

Granted. And that's true for any area. But, don't walk down the street counting your cash while listening to your iPod and you'll probably be okay.

Like Wyoming or Kentwood? Both of which have experienced more violent crime recently than the city proper.

This goes to the other poster's comment about being specific about where you're talking about. People could watch the recent news and think all of Kentwood is now a ghetto, but in reality, most all of the recent incidents occur in a small portion of Kentwood. Same thing with the city; easily 95% of the city is perfectly safe to live in as long as you're not part of the criminal element yourself.

My goodness the way you all talk and act scared you should move to planet mars and live by yourself.

I stayed in GR 97% of my life, Grand Rapids IS SAFE and Heaven compared to Detroit.

The thing with GR is its crime on crime. Innocent people dont get shoot robbed or murdered. If you their minding your own business or what not you will be safe.

I know white people to walk in the hood late at night walking their dogs

GR crime is just drug crimes and so on. If you plan on selling drugs then it may be dangerous for you, if you just mind your own business and be street smart just like you would anywhere you will be safe as can be!

Like I say innocent people usually dont get robbed or killed unlike Detroit where you can be at a stoplight and somebody shoot you and car jack you

I don't think it's fair for you to say that you have lived in GR 97% of your life......and then make emphatic statements about Detroit when You have likely not lived their even .01% of your life. Innocent people are victims of crime in Grand Rapids! Crimes of opportunity do happen. Even with Detroits population loss Detroit has almost 4 times the population of Grand Rapids. When I lived in GR there were over 30 murders a year some years. Multiply that by 4 to equal the size of Detroit and you would have 120 murders a year. Now imagine listening to the news in a city with 120 murders. Even though the crime rate is essentially the same per capita, all of a sudden people would think that Grand Rapids is very violent.

Lets face it, crime is simply news and statistics for most people. It's not really something that personally impacts you. I know many people personally who were murdered, as well as, people who did murder(s). I have had relatives on both ends, unfortunately. I am simply amazed how people who really have little experience in certain environments act like experts, notwithstanding.
