Ok, so I"ve never been to a bar before. Since I just relocated to the area, i want to be open to try new things, meet new people, and just see where it goes. I still do not know any one yet, so I'll be going by myself.

A couple of questions:

1. I'm male, 28, single (obvously), asian. Are there certain bars or clubs in the grand rapids area that fits me better? Definitely don't want a place too aggressive or a place that I will get messed with if I stand out as a newbie.

2. What do people do in a bar by themselves? Do they just sit and wait for people to talk to them? I guess I still dont get it...yet. Maybe once I try it, I'll understand.

3. how should I approach it? go to a bar, sit at the bar section, and just talk to people sitting next to me?

any suggestions or thoughts?

This is unbelieveable! I have gone to bars myself all my life. I am a legend at seedy dark dive bars. I sit there and swig my Pabst as Cash plays on the jukebox. If you are going to a sports bar or some phony "Irish" place I can't offer advice as I avoid such places. Go to the neighborhood dive bar and party it up!

I've found that the loners usually post up at the bar. I stopped by a bar once for a quick drink by myself and there was another loner there and he started chatting up with me. Bars are definiately your best choice. Going to a club alone could get awkward.

I always go to the bar alone without really even thinking about it. I just go there, sit down and drink, sometimes I meet people, sometimes I just enjoy my relaxing time with beer. I don't really think about it too much.. its just somethin to do. I'd never go to a club alone, but then again, I'd never go to a club with friends either.

Try the Meanwhile on Wealthy Street, or Mulligans in Eastown. Just post up at the bar and you'll be fine.

I think a good place to try that would be Rocky's Bar on Ottawa Ave, north of downtown. It has a pretty friendly vibe. I've only gone to the bar alone a few times, but Rocky's was one of them, and I liked the atmosphere.
