Not viable at all. The NHL would put another team in Atlanta before Grand Rapids. As previously stated Detroit and Chicago would never let it happen. Double the population of Grand Rapids and it still wouldn't happen. If Hamilton cannot get a team because of politics, Grand Rapids never will.

The most challenging thing to overcome is the fact that Michigan already has an NHL team and NHL fans in the Grand Rapids area already have allegiances to the Detroit Red Wings.

If the above wasn't true, I think Grand Rapids could easily support a NHL team. If Nashville (CSA population 1,670,890) can support an NHL team (and an NFL team as well), Grand Rapids (CSA population 1,321,557) certainly could. Hockey in Michigan is much more popular than in Tennessee. Whereas Michigan has seven Division I college hockey teams, Tennessee does not have a single college hockey team, even at the Division III level. Whereas Michigan has 176 high school hockey teams, Tennessee has 16.

The NHL Board of Governors (the owners) would never approve a team for GR Wings owner Mike Illitch did everything in his power to stand in the way of a baseball team taking over Tiger Stadium (even the Mudhens) because of the competition . The NHL has no plans for expansion .. in fact the NHL is having a hard time keeping small market teams like Phoenix , Nashville , Carolina etc. afloat . And we all saw what happened to Atlanta (again ) . Now the NHLPA (players union) is nixing plans for the re-alignment because they don't like the way a new playoff format would be if that went through (already approved by the NHL Board of Governors) I think it would be easier if the Wings swapped places with Atlanta now Winnipeg , we go to the East where we belong and they take our place in the West where they belong , but a handful of team owners don't want that because when the Wings play on the road their ticket sales go way up . Nothing personal , I just don't think the NHL needs a team in GR

Maine would be better, If they had a larger population and more money. But Mainers love hockey and the Bruins don't represent New England like the Patriots do.
