We want to finish our basement and was wondering the average cost to do this in Grand Rapids. This would be a no frills basement. Drywall, carpet, recessed lights and heating. Would also like to finish a full bath. Can anyone suggest a contractor that can do this economically?

If you do it yourself, you could probable keep it under 4-5 thousand dollars, depending on the number of rooms and their size. Adding a bathroom really increases that. But doing one large room with insulation, studs, drywall, interior finishes, carpet and a drop ceiling can be done for that.

I'd highly recommend an interior trench drainage system or you could lose it all in one big rain storm.

It's about $20/square foot using most small contractors, not counting a bathroom. We just went through this and got multiple quotes.

We ended up doing ours ourselves, but it's still probably going to be about $8 - 10 sf, not counting a bathroom (figure $3000 just for a full bath). We've spent $1900 so far and we've done framing, heat runs/cold air returns, hung doors and done electric, for 800 sf with no bathroom. Still have to do insulation, drywall, trim, and paint. Carpet alone will probably run $2000, installed.
