We're planning on moving to the GR area and would like to know what the best cell phone carrier in the area is. We currently have Verizon. I would assume that Verizon has good coverage in that whole area, but when we visited the GRCC area a month ago, there was a rather large dead zone. Has anyone else noticed any specific areas that don't work well with one carrier or another?

Thanks for the input!

Generally Verizon has had really good service in the area. I had ATT my whole time there with little issue. GRCC was never a dead zone for me, at least when walking around/through it. I never studied there.

I have ATT and have never had an issue in and around the downtown area.

I think Verizon has the reputation for the best coverage in this area. AT&T's coverage map is a joke. At both my home and workplace, both of which are in "best" shading on their map, I get poor reception and call quality. That's with voice and fortunately I do not talk much on the phone. I have no complaints with AT&T's data coverage.

Yes! I have Verizon on an iPhone 3G and downtown is horrible for some reason. Making calls isn't bad, but you can't get on the internet, or it takes forever.

I use Verizon and there's really nowhere in Grand Rapids that I have trouble with reception. There aren't really any dead areas like you see in other parts of the country, I've driven in some parts of the USA where the service literally just goes out, but here in Grand Rapids that just doesn't happen unless you're inside somewhere, but I even get service in Meijers.

Magellan could be right about the downtown thing, but I have to admit that I have never actually noticed anything being slower or having any kind of trouble with my internet, but it's probably more due to the fact that when I'm downtown I'm usually just catching some beers with a friend so phone internet isn't what I'm looking at.
