Going up to the Grand Rapids area to scout out a place to live. Have a daughter in middle school so good schools are essential. Visited last year and we kind of liked Lowell, Ada, Rockford area although we wouldn't mind Grandville, Allendale, Jenison areas. Don't know any of the areas very well at all. I would prefer an older home with a larger lot but will settle for smaller lot if the house/location is lovely.

I work from home so it doesn't matter about the job situation. I am coming from the DFW, Texas area so anything will be better than where I am now. Older home, to me, is an old farmhouse from the turn of the century but I am open to other options as well, as I previously stated -- if it's in a good school district, I can work with it.

Before we moved to Atlanta last summer, we lived in Ada for 12 years. Our kids went to Forest Hills schools before transferring to their current schools. Ada, Rockford and Lowell are also good choices to find some farm houses.
When you are ready to narrow down, post back.

Well, I've narrowed it down to Ada or Lowell. Going up there in a couple weeks to look at the properties. I'm so excited! Michigan is beautiful!!

One note is that you probably want Forest Hills Schools, and school district boundaries in Kent County don't necessarily follow any other geographic or political boundary. So I'd aim for Ada and then verify Forest Hills Schools.

Forest Hills schools are great, but there is no reason to be afraid of Lowell schools either. Hundreds of kids from Lowell schools go off to college and become successful every year. I think people get too hung up on school districts sometimes.
