My family is moving to the GR area sometime this summer. We (me, hubby & 18 yr old daughter) found a home near Benjamin Ave & Franklin St (near MLK Park). It fits all our needs, but we're wondering if the area could be considered safe for our family. We are usually very conscious of our safety (i.e. lock doors & windows, we have 2 dogs, we don't wander around the city streets alone at night, etc.). I have worked in what I would assume to be a much more dangerous area (in Detroit) in the past and had no trouble because I'm really cautious when it comes to safety (my hubby says too much so, but I don't believe that to be true). Would you live in this area with your family?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I grew up in that neighborhood and I would not live there. But it might be better now than it used to be.

GRPD has crime mapping here:

Crime Mapping

Looks okay if you're south of Franklin and north of Hall aka 'Old Ottawa Hills' and that area gets pretty nice quite quickly as you get further east. Ottawa Hills also has a reputation for being a place where people look out for each other. Between Franklin and Wealthy is still a bit sketchy, though it seems better than it used to be.

I'd say it's pretty decent. As others have said, it gets nicer the further East you go toward Ottawa Hills, but then prices go up. You should drive through the area at night and see what kind of activity you see. If there are a lot of teens hanging out on corners and suspicious activity, might not be so good.
