Metro Detroit has a lot of Muslims; Grand Rapids has fewer and a lot of them are Bosnians.(ie. not the most observant lot.) In the USA, there's a common cultural assumption that only a criminal feels the need to hide their face. But dressing modestly and covering the hair and head are generally not a big deal as long as the face is visible.

Grand Rapids is not a huge city, so it's not as common as other big cities. But, I see more and more Muslims here in GR and it seems to be pretty accepted. Areas like Kentwood and Forest Hills probably have the largest populations of Middle Eastern people. Hope that helps!

I agree with Magellan. They just built a new mosque in Kentwood on East Paris St and a new halal grocery is opening next door. I think there is probably an active community that is not as visible as in Dearborn and the Detroit metro area. Good luck with your move!

There are a couple of other mosques too, one out on Cascade Rd that I've seen.
