Hi,

Any opinions on the viability of commuting by bike between East Grand Rapids and Downtown?

I currently do this here in Germany through ice, snow, and rain, but a shorter distance and in a town with lots of cyclists, great bike lanes, few traffic lights, and drivers who respect bikes. What's it really like to cycle on Lake Dr and Fulton, for example?

many thanks!
Rob

Pretty doable. I think there is a bike lane on Lake but last I knew not on Fulton. It probably won't be quite as bike friendly once you hit Fulton.

There is a decent hill to climb going back east on Fulton for the trip home. As long as that isn't an issue you should be fine.

What Jandur said is right. Lake is decent, Fulton not as much. Heading East on the way home is pretty much all uphill until you get to about Diamond I think. Going TO work will be fine, and you won't be a big sweaty mess because it's pretty much all downhill.

Protip: take the bus home, or at least up the hill. They have bike racks. A month pass is not too expensive.

I did that commute several times weekly, but not every day, for a few years. It was easy, and enjoyable. There are other commuters on nice days. On rainy/snowy days you'll be pretty much the only person on the road for the most part.

Thanks -- this is exactly what I needed to know! I figured I would combine bus and bike in some way and this makes a lot of sense.
