Last night I went to Roses at Reeds Lake, came out just after 8 and there were hordes of tiny flies around, settling on cars and all over me and my wife as we walked back to the car

Are these little blighters a common occurrence this time of year or is it a special 'one off' day when they all appear ?

( I've moved over from England and there was a couple of days in a year when all the flying ants would hatch and fill the sky, wondering if this is something similar or whether these many flies are there all the time at this time of night and year )

I was out too... I've lived in Michigan my entire life, and in East Grand Rapids for almost 8 years.

Thursday night was the first time I can ever recall the plague of flying ants or whatever it was. They were all over the EGR football game and we went home early because they kept landing in my kids' hair.

It's not common for this time of year or any other by any measure I'm aware of.

Are these the long-winged little buggers that we usually see up north around Mackinac City?

They seemed more like ants than mayflies to me (if that's what your'e talking about).
I didn't recognize them.

Right. Mayflies. Pesky little buggers.

I finally saw/felt my first mosquito in Holland last evening. It's been a wonderful bug-free year so far.
