So I've never been to the city before and am moving next year to pursue school. My buddies locked up a house close to Lake Michigan Dr on the North East side of John Ball Park and I decided to go ahead and take a blind stab and agree to live there. Can anybody give me insight as to what the area is like? I am a 20 year old male college student. Any information is helpful!

Hey Kyle, can you give more info on exactly what you're looking for? Where you come from, what school you're going to, etc.? I come from Los Angeles, but now live in Holland, Mi. Where you come from is really important. For example, I wish someone had told me, "No, that's right. No Trader Joes. No Whole Foods. And no, don't bother with looking for anything similar. If you must, go to Chicago or Ann Arbor for those things. Instead of climbing mountains, you'll climb sand dunes. You might even forget why you like Trader Joe's so much.."

What Magellan said. It's not bad. Unless you are a 90lb female that is going to be running around at night with an iPod in I wouldn't really worry about it.

BigKyle: That area is challenged somewhat by a lot of low income rentals and college rentals, but not bad overall. Even Grand Rapids' worst areas are better than a lot of other city's best areas. Lake Michigan Drive is busy as it's connects with I-196 which is a great way to get to Holland and the lakeshore from GR. I haven't look at the crime stats, but they're probably about what you'd expect for an older neighborhood that's turned into rentals and lower income housing.

There is some new development happening right there too...a gas station closed and a new building is going up. I see some new fast food places going in too. The zoo is right there, as is the park and playground too. The park isn't really developed as a park -- more of an open area. The playground is nice. I assume you've "Street Viewed" it on Google Maps. Would be a good neighborhood to do some running in.

It's right on the main bus line between GVSU's two campuses -- Allendale and downtown Grand Rapids. Plus, you're only about two miles from downtown GR and all the restaurants, bars and concert venues. Hope this helps.

Kind of run down and shabby - but it's all in what you're used to living in. I wouldn't prefer to live there but there are worse places to live. It's close to GVSU at least.

Looks like crime in Easttown. Some non-invasive theft, couple drug busts, some fights (assault). Meh.
