Just returned from a trip to Des Moines, Iowa where my daughter treated us to a fun afternoon drive looking at beautiful old mansions/homes in the downtown Grand/Terrace Hill area. Would like to do the same when she is here next. I've got Kalamazoo covered, but would appreciate some suggestions for the Grand Rapids area. Where should we go?

Step one would be the Heritage Hill area, which is one of the country's largest urban preservation districts. They've got a walking tour brochure on the community web site:
Heritage Hill Neighborhood Association, Grand Rapids, Michigan
I'd then drive a bit east and look at some of the parts of East Grand Rapids near the lakes.

Not in GR but not too far a drive away are the Hackey and Hume houses at Muskegon - and you get to go in them
