Just returned from a trip to Des Moines, Iowa where my daughter treated us to a fun afternoon drive looking at beautiful old mansions/homes in the downtown Grand/Terrace Hill area. Would like to do the same when she is here next. I've got Kalamazoo covered, but would appreciate some suggestions for the Grand Rapids area. Where should we go?

Step one would be the Heritage Hill area, which is one of the country's largest urban preservation districts. They've got a walking tour brochure on the community web site:

Heritage Hill Neighborhood Association, Grand Rapids, Michigan

I'd then drive a bit east and look at some of the parts of East Grand Rapids near the lakes.

Not in GR but not too far a drive away are the Hackey and Hume houses at Muskegon - and you get to go in them
Hackley and Hume mansions

Heritage Hill will blow you away. 1400 registered homes I believe. That doesn't even include the Cherry Hill Historic District next door.

Agree 100% with the suggestion of touring Heritage Hill. It's fantastic.

If you visit East Grand Rapids (about 3 miles east of Heritage Hill) make sure to drive Bonnell Ave. along the shore of Reeds Lake, Plymouth Ave. and Cambridge Rd south of Franklin. Those are the best big historic homes in EGR.

On your way from Heritage Hill to EGR, stop at Mangiamo! and have dinner in an old mansion.

Bonnell is the best in East. Huge, beautiful houses, one after another. Dope stuff.
