We are moving to Grand Rapids in early/mid September and looking to rent a home for 6-12 months prior to purchasing a home. We are seriously considering east gr and hoping a rental home would be a great way to learn about the neighborhood, etc prior to buying. We have scoured craigs list and rental sites online but having a tough time finding a decent family home - we are both professionals and willing to spend $2000-2300+ for a nicer! executive type home. Is this possible in gr on this budget? Any info/advice anyone could pass on would be very helpful. Thanks so much!

Grab whatever you can find in either area. The market is so tight you can't be picky on a rental.

My experience is similar. We're renting in Forest Hills for $2,600 a month... it's a 4 bedroom 3.5 bath home... about 3,300 square feet. It's a fairly large house but not what I'd call a nice executive (too dated)... it's valued at about $350k probably (nicer house down the street sold for that a few months ago). When we were looking, the available rental market in EGR/Forest Hills was very tight so you won't be allowed the luxury of being picky.

Oh yeah, that $2,600 doesn't include any utilities or extras... we do all the lawn care and snow removal still.

As others have said, if you tour something you like, be prepared to write a check on the spot. There are nice places out there but they often rent out within the first half hour to hour on the day the landlord does showings. If you really want a 6 month lease, it will be a challenge, if not impossible.

When we were buying a house 10 years ago, we looked at Forest Hills vs. East Grand Rapids. We found that you get much more house for your money in Forest Hills and the school district is great. We have loved living in FH. Our children have gotten an excellent education, have tons of friends, and play sports all year (ie. Cross country, basketball, football, track, and lacrosse. Now we are moving out of state and the realtor selling our house said that we were smart to invest in a house in Forest Hills rather than EGR. Apparently, houses in FH are in much higher demand than EGR at this point. I will say that EGR is a beautiful town if you are looking for the "small city" neighborhood feel, you can walk anywhere. FH is more suburban neighborhoods.
