Wow. This was loooonnnnnnggggg overdue. A Former WGPR program director from Detroit will be the station manager. I listen to XM now.....or music via my smart phone, which many people are now doing also. The terrestrial free local R&B Hip Hip is less of a choice of mine these days, unless I am in Detroit or other markets where free radio with black formats are in abundance.

My Magic GR

Now that it has....hopefully it can be successful. I wonder how far does it reach? Can they hear it in Muskegon?

This is really a positive step for the area, because amenities that cater to AA are sparse....in a CSA with nearly 100,000 AA...that is sad. How long has Saginaw had such a station....DECADES!

Is this really the first R&B station in GR? Kalamazoo has been having an R&B and old school station for the longest. You can't hear it in GR though.

The years that I lived in GR...it was never known to have had an FM R&B station. It has had an AM station that went off when the sun went down....literally. It was sad....but it did offer local black news, talk and opinions.

Kzoo likely benefits from Western Michigan University, just like Lansing benefits from MSU. Lansing has a nice Hip Hop. I used to listen to it when I would drive from Detroit to GR.

I remember 1580 AM in GR and in the Fall and Winter, you could hear it in Upstate NY.

Power 96.5 in Lansing has always been a very good R&B/Hip Hop station. WTLZ is the station in Saginaw you are referring to. I think Benton Harbor either had its own station or could at least get a station from either South Bend IN, Kalamazoo or Chicago.

Anyway, this is very much long overdue for GR. Muskegon has V-100, by the way.

Yeah...I know you can get WGCI in Benton Harbor.

Thanks for the info. I heard about 97.3 but I think the last time I was in GR I turned to that frequency and they were playing Polka or Latin Music. I might be wrong, but I think that station changes formats....so it depends on the day or time what you will hear.

Anyway, an FM R&B is new, even it the station was previously AM, because FM sounds totally different on the radio than AM. For one its usually in stereo and there is also less interference with Frequency Modulation. When you are used to listening to FM music, then you listen to GR's AM R&B stations, it just sounded so muffled.
