I am sure this message is on here more than once but I could use any advice anyone is willing to offer. My wife is being relocated to Caledonia and I will transfer as a special education teacher and football coach (hopefully) in the area. We are moving from Baton Rouge and will be arriving in June.

Right now we are eyeballing the following schools: Forest Hills, East GR, Grandville, and Caledonia. My kids will be going into the 8th and 9th grade. They are great students, and are both excellent athletes (soccer/baseball). Schools are of utmost importance to us.

We will have a max house price in the 450K range. Need advice on neighborhoods and the like.

Looking forward to this new adventure and yes even the cold. I miss my Virginia winters and am ready for snow again.

So thankful for any advice you have!!! Thanks and have a great day!!

So pretty much each city you listed is above average, and will contain real estate within your range. The exception being your price range will be on the low end for East Grand Rapids. You can pretty much make it work in any of them. Is there more specific criteria that is important that might help single it out?

I have also read a lot about the price of car insurance there.....I thought it was high in Louisiana until I found out you guys lead the pack in high premiums. Any recommendations on companies that offer good insurance and don't break the bank?

We use an independent agent who can shop around to the various carriers they offer. Putting home and auto at the same carrier usually gives you a discount.

Up to $450k will give you a good selection of homes in those areas. You might also add Byron Center, one of the fastest growing areas in GR with good schools, and not far from Caledonia. You're more likely to find new homes (or good homes period) there than in Forest Hills right now.

For auto insurance, as a Michigan teacher you can get MEEMIC, which is one of the least expensive companies around with great benefits. It really is hard to beat.

I would recommend you try the Byron Center area. The schools are excellent and the homes are both nicer and within your range (actually mostly well below that). I was a nanny for kids in that school district as well and can verify they place a high importance on the kids' education there. I honestly would not recommend any of the Grand Rapids schools for their ages.
