Why are there so many registered sex offenders in the Grand Rapids area? This concerns me since I am considering relocating with my two children, interested in Rockford. Seems to be a low ratio of sex offenders to residents according to the data compared to average US ratios. Whats the deal? 35 registered sex offenders in Rockford alone.

This is not something I have ever heard of being an issue in Grand Rapids more than any other place. Not sure why there appears to be a higher than average ratio. However there isn't an epidemic of sexual offense and children that are unsafe. In fact the area is usually ranked as one of the best places in the country to raise a family. Even more so in Rockford. I would say that if you decided not to move to the area based on that metric, you would be making a decision on an intangible statistic not based in reality. It would be unfortunate and bordering on paranoia.

Thank you, certainly not paranoid just concerned. That's why I wanted to ask the question here because I know that not everything you read about online is a reality. I love that this forum exists to get opinions from real people who have lived in the area. Maybe it could be that crimes are better reported and prosecuted there.....one could hope.

I would say it's more related to how the State and local courts treat sex offenders, rather than how many sex offenders there are in comparison to other areas.
Honestly I don't look at those reports. A family member is 10x more likely to be a victim of a sex offender they know or are related to, than a complete stranger.

When looking at sex offender listings, you need to look at the offenses, not the numbers. Do you really care whether Jimmy had sex with his sophomore or Jr. girlfriend in his senior year of high school? Do you care that Janet went int he bushes at a park because she had to pee and someone saw and reported her? There could be 100 such "sex offenders" in my area and it would not bother me, unless the parks all started to reek of pee. However one pedophile next door and I want to look elsewhere. So, to me, numbers of registered offenders mean nothing.
