I am what's known as a "senior citizen."

Considering a move to GR and currently scouting for a place where I might be able to throw (baseball, football) indoors with a friend, do a little weight room work but certainly not interested in joining a Spandex/steroid crowd.

Some kind of family center with a gymnasium would work - maybe a community center, even a high school with an adult community program.

Does this sound like anything in the GR area? I might be relocating to an eastern suburb or outpost along I-96 East.

Thanks.

The Downtown YMCA. It's called the David D Hunting YMCA. It has a very diverse age group and a lot of programs for older folks, 2 beautiful pools (lap pool and a lazy river/waterslide pool), large gyms upstairs that have open gym time, plenty of cardio and weight equipment, very clean and new feeling, a track that rings the outside of the 3rd floor that has awesome views of downtown. I live on the NE side of GR and it only takes me about 10 minutes to get there.

And it's pretty inexpensive.

OP is coming from the east coast, so he probably will not find it inexpensive. I paid $104/month for a 2 person household when I was a member.

By east coast standards, that's about 2x what he'll be used to.

Then again, compared to MVP, that is cheap.

I seem to recall you're mostly into lifting weights, which yes, even $50/month is expensive. And I don't really know why you'd join the Y to just lift weights.

But for $75/month for an individual to have access to all of the cardio equipment, pools, racquetball courts, basketball courts, spin classes, zumba, yoga, track, etc, etc it's pretty inexpensive.

Because that was the cheapest option at the time. An individual membership at MVP was around 90 if I remember correctly, and it was overcrowded.

Hopefully GR, with its influx of money, has had an investor open another gym somewhere besides the YMCA and MVP. Planet Fitness doesn't count. It's nothing more than a glorified hotel gym.

It was a sad day when the MAC, East Hills, Champions and Co. closed their gyms.

Anyway, for comparison, there are 5+ gyms here in SE Virginia. The individual rate for the YMCA here is $30/month.

There are more gyms here than you can shake a stick at. Seems like a new one opens every month. Orangetheory Fitness is the latest one by us. There are Snap Fitnesses all over now. Allegro. CKO. Great Escape. Fitness Compassion. Up and Out. Flex City. Fit Body Boot Camp.

I still prefer the downtown Y.
