I am coming to Michigan soon to scope it out for a possible place to move.

I have read a bunch of these forums and tried to the search feature and am not finding threads that are close to what I am seeking....

I work remotely- so I do not have a need to be near any particular city nor do I need to be within any sort of distance to a larger MI city.

I have two pre-teen kiddos. Of extreme need for us is a community that is very welcoming to newbies and a high sense of community. Think things like: farmers markets, community events for kids/families etc.

One of my kids is into sports. My other kid is into hiking, performing arts, and music. As a family we love all things water related... jet ski, kayaking etc.

We like smaller (ish) towns that you can walk and bike to places with friends and each other.

Would love any input of places you recommend.

From a financial perspective- I have a housing budget of 300-350k but would love to stay closer to 250 if I can. If I really had my way I wouldn't be in an HOA community

Thank you!

Grand Rapids. Get a real nice home near downtown (which is not crazy busy) in that price range. NO HOA's. Farmers Market nearby SE of Downtwon.

Or... I think you would like Rockford. Mountain bike/running trails. Kayaking/Canoeing/tubing options. River fly fishing. Community events galore. Really cool outdoor loving community. Archery range (inside and out) Softball fields. BMX track.

Yeah Rockford is probably going to hit all of your points perfectly. I’d say runners up will be Greenville, Lowell, and Grand Haven which is along the lakeshore.

Rockford is also surrounded by inland lakes, several of which have public parks and access points.

Hello! I would highly recommend Grand Haven. We lived there for 10 years and I loved every minute of it. The only downfall was the long, gloomy winters. It has a strong sense of community, it’s very family oriented, there is little to no crime, the schools are excellent, and there are lots of year-round outdoor activities. I would also recommend Spring Lake, Muskegon (Mona Shores area), and Holland. We moved to Columbia, SC two years ago for my husband’s job and the only thing I like here is the mild winters. Although, I really miss the four seasons in Michigan. I am counting down the years until my husband retires and we can go back to Grand Haven.
