Hi all, I have been searching for a new city to call home for awhile now.
I have stumbled upon Traverse City and love it. I love how active it is despite it being winter. Everywhere I turn there are people out, cross country skiing, fat tire biking etc.

Is there other cities similar to Traverse? I do love TC here are my two apprehensions:
1)I have to travel a lot and am not sure being 2.5 hours from a "bigger" airport is going to work for the last minute flights
2)Housing costs--I have a ideal max budget for a home of 350K
3)Income- with the population being lower and further away from the "larger metro" areas, I am a bit nervous of what my income may look like.

So what other cities should I check out? Ones that are super welcoming, friendly, and has the vibe of being super active. Kids winter activities like TC does etc.

Thanks!!

I would think that the cities that would work with what you're looking for would be the lake shore cities like Grand Haven or Holland, though they probably won't be quite as active in the winter as Traverse. They would be closer to Grand Rapids airport for quick travel. Though bear in mind that Traverse City's airport is the 4th busiest in Michigan. Busier than much more populated cities like Lansing, Kalamazoo, and the Tri-Cities MBS airport. It served over 500k passengers in 2018 and was up double digits in 2019(though I can't find 2019's exact statistics). It has direct flights to 17 cities with the majority of them being pretty busy hubs. I would think it would still be able to cater to most of your needs. If you need better air service than that you're next best bet might be to look at some of the more quaint/active Grand Rapids suburbs like Rockford, East Grand Rapids, or Lowell.

You can easily get a nice home in a great neighborhood in Grand Rapids, where you're close to trails and parks and nature preserves. The last two years though, the winters have not been great for cross-country skiing or fat biking. More ice and sleet than good fluffy snow. In fact, we had no measurable snow on the ground here yesterday, which is really weird for early February. We got about 2 inches last night, not really enough to enjoy with outdoor activities.

Everyone I know has been going "up north" to Cadillac and Traverse City to find good snow.

So as mjlo said, maybe searching some of the lakeshore communities like Spring Lake or Grand Haven, which are close to Grand Rapids. You get the added bonus of having a lot of beaches and sand dunes to go to in the summer. They do tend to get more snow at the lakeshore than the GR area.
