The ISDs are typically set up to provide education for those who are looking at going directly into a career after secondary education, although there are some tech programs that could help for a typical engineering program at the likes of MIT. If you look at attainment on MEAPs and other measures of excellence, City Middle/ High School is top rated. (Yes, believe it or not, it is in the Grand Rapids Public School District!). Outlying areas: Forest Hills, Rockford, Grandville, Jenison, Hudsonville are all good districts.

Default High Schools

Hello
I maybe off the mark here but I think one of the best High Schools-in my opinion is:City High which is for the above average student. Also as already mentioned Forest Hills/East Grand Rapids school district.

I believe City High out-rates EGR and FH on standardized test scores. It definitely belongs in this discussion.

There are no "prep" schools in West Mi. There are however great public schools in Forest Hills and EGR as mentioned and there are several private Caholic and Christian high schools. GR Catholic Central may be your best private school as it has been established for years, but not the same as a Country Day or Cranbrooke in Metro D.

My kids go to Forest Hills Eastern, the new school.

We moved here from the supposedly horrible public schools in California. The counselors here expect everyone to go to GRCC or GVSU after graduation. Little consideration is given to the fact some might want to seek higher education than that.

We find it disturbing.

My oldest daughter took four years of Spanish. When we moved here, she was upset to find out they were teaching the version from SPAIN.

Who in the western hemisphere speaks that version? Certainly not the 20M or so "immigrants" from south of the border that you might interact with.

I would rate the schools a solid "FAIR". The parents I would give a "Fail" to especially as far as sports are concerned, and the kids tend to be cliquey and mean.

City High is rigorous and college prep. The student has to test into it and be accepted, but it is part of the public system.

City High and Middle School in the Grand Rapids School District is the second highest scoring high school in all of Michigan. You have to test into it, but it is by far the best.
