Don't you have to live within the city limits of Kalamazoo, throughout all their school years, to qualify?

Nope. Just live in the district.

To the OP. I lived off 68th St. (Southern Kent County) for a year and commuted to Kalamazoo two days a week. From there it was exactly 30 miles to the first Kzoo exit. I like farmland, so I didn't mind the drive. But the commute isn't uncommon. It is nice to pay less for Gas though.

God, I miss Grand Rapids...just wanted to throw that out there.

You have to live in Kzoo Public Schools (which are tougher than many suburbs, but they're just fine too... not like Detroit/Flint or something).

Here's more information on the incredible Kalamazoo Promise:

Although its a little bit more to the east of US-131, the Crystal Springs area is worth a look. Having M-6 helps get you to US-131 quickly.

Check out that link I posted... it's a tiered award.
If you go for K-12 then college is free.
If you start later, then the award decreases gradually.
I think there's still a substantial gift for going even just for 9th-12th grades.
