I'm in Grand Rapids for tonight and tomorrow night on business. I'm currently staying at the Radisson. I've never really spent time in Grand Rapids before, but this city is intriguing me. It doesn't remind me of a big Michigan city. It reminds me actually of a miniature Minneapolis. I still see remnants of the defunct auto manufacturing, but I also see some new highrises downtown that I don't recall my last visit here. (2005) It seems like there may be growth in the downtown vs. Detroit-Flint-Saginaw. What are some good places to visit downtown? This will be at night time, so where are the bad parts? It seems Grand Rapids is a couple notches better in the crime department than the Detroit-Flint-Saginaw crime belt. Haven't really seen a ghetto in Grand Rapids comparable to those three cities. Haven't really noticed burnt out, boarded up, or missing houses. It seems like Grand Rapids has a more stable population. Not a real trend downwards. I wandered over to the Walmart in Grandville and that seem like a nice suburban area. The only negatives I have seen is the architecture seems kind of dull compared to Detroit, and it is still a little small for my tastes but that is also a plus since you are a short drive to lake Michigan and other outdoor activities. Anyways, what are some must see places before I leave town? I'm thinking I'll return sometime this summer as well.

I just noticed this post. Did you check out the BOB in downtown GR? Yes, GR is more stable compared to the cities on the east side of the state. We are pretty diversified instead of depending on the auto industry.
