Prostitution.....should it be legalised?
No....I am not looking for a career change before you ask...
Just pondering about those poor women in Bradford, and the other year in Ipswich- and then going back further to the Yorkshire Ripper and Jack the Ripper and oooh....probably many many more of these women that we don't know about.
Now...I know its not a choice made because its a good option- most ( not all) of the women have drug problems or massive debts and are out on the streets because they feel they have no other choice....but quite obviously they are at the mercy of well......mad men.
Would it not be better to legalise prostitution, make brothels safe places where health checks can be done, condoms easily available and the women work in a place of safety?. Not only that they wouldn't have pimps taking their money and indeed...they could be taxed on their earnings
Because lets face it...its not called 'the oldest profession' for nothing.....its not going to go away is it?

This was actually debated and debated and debated awhile back and here is the old thread. ( Since you are a new member, I realize you wouldn't know that, however.)
As for my opinion, since you asked, I still vote "no" because I think it degrades society. Yes, I do believe you can "legislate" morality. We do it all the time. Even if you can't stop something entirely, I think it is better for it to remain illegal than to be passively approving it as society by legalizing and trying to control it.
That was a great thread. I say, "legalize it!" Why not? People who are inclined to do it are going to do it whether it's legal or not. I don't think it degrades society at all. As for the inevitable adultery factor - If your hubby is inclined to cheat, he's inclined to cheat - whether that's with a working girl or a gal who does it for free.
For the record, I have never availed myself of those kinds of services, and can't imagine ever doing it in my future. Don't do drugs, either. Haven't darkened the door of a strip club since my brother's bachelor party in 1991.
But I have a deep, abiding suspicion of government legislating morality, arbitrarily choosing what is acceptable and what is not. I'm also deeply suspicious of people who want to save other people from themselves. If a man goes to a hooker or an escort, gives her $250 for an hour of humpalumpadingdong, then how is it anyone's business? The only consideration here that affects the legality of the transaction is if both parties enter into it consensually and accept the consequences of what they do. Obviously sex trafficking falls outside of this test, yet that's really a consequence of prostitution's illegality, not prostitution itself.
As for the "it degrades women" argument, I think that's a bunch of condescending hooey. People choose to degrade themselves in all kinds of ways that aren't illegal, and it's really up to them to decide on the degree of dignity with which they live life. I mean, if we use that standard, than anyone who enters into a bondage and discipline lifestyle (Once again, not for me) should be saved from themselves through legislation. Heck, ever watch more than twenty minutes of "The Bachelor" on ABC? Those women are degrading themselves on national television for weeks on end, as opposed to an hour in some discreet hotel room. And most of the trophy wives on the planet would be behind bars, too.
I don't think it is a big deal if someone wants to have sex with a stranger. It does not hurt me, nor does it bother me...mainly because I couldn't care less.
So if that is what someone wants to do behind a closed door, it is none of our business....
besides, sex is fun.....so what is the problem.
You can pay for your " mistress" apartment, buy her cars, you just can't hand her cash right before you have sex.
Saying prostitution is illegal is just a technical phrase.

Sounds like legal prostitution to me.

I still vote "no" because I think it degrades society. Yes, I do believe you can "legislate" morality. We do it all the time.
