Sex discrimination should not be allowed. Age discrimination should be in the case of insurance companies. As Blazer Prophet suggested, discrimination against smokers, those who are obese, etc. should certainly be allowed.

In terms of health and life insurance there is a valid basis for sex differences.
On average, women need to use healthcare more frequently than males do. Also, women are more likely to keep and maintain regular exams. Therefore, it costs an insurance company more to pay for a female than it does for a male.... only makes sense to charge women more since they use it more.
On the flip side, females generally live longer than males.... so based on that probability it makes sense to charge males more for life insurance than females.
Most racial differences are social constructions, and there really is no valid reason for different rates along racial lines. However, there are fundamental biological differences between males and females....and valid reasons for different rates......
They do discriminate agianst smokers;heavy drinkers and the obese. The only time they get insurance without more payment for risk is when they take them as part of a large group.Same goes for pre-existing conditions usually after a period of time. Its all factored in.They also look at the groups demographics as to type of occupation . Generally after a time they basically get about 20% of the amount paid out and if its a group that uses more then they get more. They are writing up a policy on the average verus the individual in single insured.Theyoung work pays for the older worker and those with other problems and then they become the ones who get the benefits as they get older.Insurance is a business based on risk but they always adjust to that risk over time.
So if they had studies which showed (hypothetically):
- that Hispanic drivers were less prone to accidents than Asians, they could hike up rates for Asians and/or lower them for Hispanics?
- that white people were on avg healthier and less medical risk than black people, they could hike up rates for black people?
Good luck w/that.
Uh, we do have those studies. However, racial profiling is usually illegal. However, we can charge higher rates in areas where there is more congestion and accudents and lower rates in rural areas where there are fewer accidents. I suppose, if minorities live in the urban areas and whites in the rural areas (predominately speaking), it could be construed by some socialists as a form of racial profiling.
As to charging more for life insurance based on race, never happen.
Insurance companies, as well as all other companies (except government) can only trample on people's civil rights just so far...
My ex tried to get me on his insurance when we lived together. They wouldn't allow it. BUT if I was his BOYFRIEND, they'd cover it.
Yeah, some states are very liberal towards homos, but not heteros, living together. That's how so many people with Aides have insurance coverage.
