I believe if a person wants to end their life it's their choice to do so. I also support assisted suicides as well, if they want to end it why not let them do it as painlessly as possible.
JimmyDean87....I agree when you say "if they want to end it, why not let them do it as painlessly as possible"...but I am totally, absolutely AGAINST "assisted" suicides....murder in my opinion.

Two years ago I saw my dad go through unending pain after months of dealing with liver cirroshis two days before he passed. After this experience, I feel anyone who wants to just have the pain end should have the right to decide their own fate including the end.
Does anyone else wonder why this went national? Seriously, shouldn't this be a personal matter? I actually knew of a woman in a nursing home that decided to do something similar and, I really don't want to see it headlining. It disturbs me when someone says they don't want to be a burden to family/friends anymore. Isn't that sad? It seems that this family's personal situation is being used to push legal assisted suicide as an option since, from what I understand, this will not be a pleasant or quick death to endure. Just appears that it is a push in the direction of making one feel "obligated" to end the suffering of others rather than for themselves. This should have been a private family matter based on their beliefs and morals but when you throw it in my face, suicide is an immoral choice and celebrating it, I don't know. I hope both he and the family have had extensive mental health intervention before moving ahead with this.
Is "morally justified" about the same as "my opinion"?
Read the question stated by the OP:
"Are there any situations when the taking of one's life can be viewed as morally justifiable or is it morally wrong to do so based on other compelling reasons?"
Your opinion would be based on one's moral code. This should have been a personal matter.

So you would rather people shoot themselves, jump off bridges, slit their wrists, hang themselves, rather than letting them have a more dignified way out like lethal injection?
