I just came back to America after a short trip to some places I wanted to visit. On my last trip, I went to Italy and Namibia. One thing I learned from this trip is we as American's divide ourselves so much. My taxi driver was actually an Asian man, but he said he was just plain Italian. He didn't feel the need to describe to say he was Asian-Italian.
So my point is I am not African American, and I am not a Black American. I am an American. Why are minorities labeled as sub-Americans? I don't see anyone saying Euro-American. Are white people the only true Americans? No. These labels just divide us. This causes a lot of problems. Why do we do this?

I love this. I have been asking this question for years. I will never understand it. It is as though people don't want to recognize American as a nationality. We have been a unified nation for almost 250 years now, let's start acting like one.

I think you have a point so I'm not trying to reject your entire statement, but you must acknowledge that your perspective comes from living in America and visiting Italy. Based on experience, I'm pretty sure the general Italian public views that taxi driver as an Asian man or Asian-Italian, much like my friends here think of me as Asian-American, while my friends and acquaintances from abroad generally think of me as an American.

No, it isn't like that everywhere. My family is Jamaican. "Out of many we are one" is the saying. There is no Indian-Jamaicans, Asian-Jamaicans, European-Jamaicans. Only Jamaicans.
Namibia is heavily black and German, but there is no real divide.

Great point. Anyone who is a U.S. citizen should be considered 100% AMERICAN.
Any other national culture an immigrant may bring to America only enhances America. That's all that matters.
I agree, I hate the African-American or German-American labels. They state that you are something else first and American second. I would much prefer American with German Ancestry if you must describe your heritage. If you want to be German first, move back to Germany.
In many cases the wording developed because former labels were determined to be racist or stereotypes. In some cases the labels have changed several times as the stereotypes migrated to the new term.
How many Germans are really still left in Namibia?
Alot more than ya think . All the cities are still named in German.
If we got rid of labels, we could unite our self as a country.
