Y! SPORTS

This guy's a jerk, but he does say what I've felt for a long time now. The word "thug" is thrown around a lot these days, typically to describe a young black male a (usually) white person simply doesn't like, and given the context (eg, not related to criminality) easily replaced with the "n-word" in most cases.
Thoughts?

Well, it probably will be synonymous with the n-word now that Sherman has put it out there as being such. People do love to jump on bandwagons. In my world a thug is a ruffian or hooligan and is not race-specific.

The last time I used it, I was referring to Justin Bieber.

IMO you are totally off base. Anyone, of any ethnicity, can be a thug. Race has no bearing whatsoever.

Whatever shall I do?

I appreciate the responses, but it's not about who can be a thug, or who you personally consider a thug, but how the term is used in American vernacular today. The Trayvon Martin trial brought it out most convincingly, and even our president has been term a "thug" quite often. The term is used quite freely on any black man or child who has no criminal record yet says or acts a certain way which irritates conventional/conservative white America for one reason or another.

I'm not going to suggest that that particular usage hasn't increased, but it's a major leap to suggest that that's all "thug" means. I still think of it more in terms of organized crime or enforcers of any kind (including that mostly white sport, hockey).

It was his "thug" pics that stuck. If they had only kept in his school clothes, never would have entered anyone's mind. However, when that pic of him in an hoodie acting gansta, it' pretty much stuck forever. Well that, and the fact he jumped Zimmerman first. That didn't help. Probably should have figured out if he was armed first.

As luck would have it, he was. And that was....that.
